Accepted Thoughts

Israel is Not a Place

I am not religious.  I do not attend a church.  I believe that politics, public schools, and governments around the world should be void of all religious ideology.  That would probably make for a much better world, more peaceful anyway.  Unfortunately, that is not the world we live in.  So, it is vitally important that we understand religion and consider it consistently – all of the good and all of the bad.

I have never read the entire Christian Bible, but I have read the book of Genesis (or most of it) five or six times.  I find it fascinating.  Whether or not you believe it is inspired by God or made up entirely, you have to admit that it is an excellent piece of literature.  It is filled with struggle, conflict, love, sex, humor, triumph, psychology. . . The list goes on. In the course of one of those readings, I came to a conclusion that clarified so much to me about the persistent conflicts in our world.  The nation of Israel is not a place.  It is a people.

It is with that context, Israel is a people, that I consider the narratives spun around the world through various media about or pertaining to Jewish people.  More importantly, it is with that perspective, that I consider calls for Palestinian liberation.  When a mullah from Iran, a terrorist organization like Hamas, or a college professor from Minnesota calls for the liberation of Palestine, what I hear is “Kill the Jews”.  When they say they want to “liberate” Palestine From the River to the Sea, they are not calling for a change in political structure or overthrowing a government.  They want to eradicate Israel.  They do not want to coexist.  They want to Kill the Jews.

It is with that perspective that I consider this article from The Free Press.
